Best IPS Gaming Monitors [2017]

Are you planning to upgrade your PC gaming setup? If you are, you’re probably already in the lookout for gaming monitors. Out of a myriad of monitors to choose from, which one should you pick? Now before you head out to the store and buy the most expensive monitor or the one with the largest screen, you still need to know a few more details about the two most popular types of panels in gaming monitors – IPS and TN.

IPS Vs TN Gaming Monitor

Before buying a gaming monitor, you will need to understand first the two most common types of panels in monitors – TN or IP. TN or Twisted Nematic Display is considered to be the most common type and is found in around 90% of the monitors. It is also the oldest and the cheapest to make and are known for its short response time (ms). Due to this, it is ideal for gamers who often rely on twitch-like responses. With today’s LED backlighting, you can expect to get good brightness and less energy consumed from TN monitors. However, these type of monitors have poor viewing angles and if you choose a large screen, you can see the washed out colors.

IPS or In-plane Switching monitor on the other hand has significant increase in color reproduction, screen quality and viewing angles. Though IPS gaming monitors tend to be more expensive compared to TN monitors, you would get the value for your money as its quality is way better. The only disadvantage of IPS monitors is the slower response time when you compare it with the TN but as technology advances, IPS monitors have become more dominant and more popular with gamers.

IPS Display Technology

Today, most smartphones and tablets use IPS technology as they are commonly used to store images, watch videos and movies and video chat. Their advanced colors and improved angles provide a perfect entertainment experience for users. Additionally, professionals in the creative field such as artists, graphic designers, photo editing experts and more will gladly benefit from IPS monitors as they can provide greater viewing angles and wider color gamut.

In fact, there are already different IPS versions that come with varied technologies such as Super TFT (IPS) technology for a wide viewing angle, the Super-IPS (S-IPS) technology for color shift free and an improvement on pixel refresh timing, the Advanced Super-IPS (AS-IPS) technology for high transmittance, the Enhanced IPS (E-IPS) technology for enhanced diagonal viewing angle and reductions in response time, the Horizontal IPS (H-IPS) for improved contrast ratio and Advanced True White polarizing film which makes a more natural color of white, and the Professional IPS (P-IPS) for a more true color depth.

Now that we have established the two most popular types of panels in gaming monitors – TN and IPS and have compared both their advantages and disadvantages, as well as more insight to the IPS Display technology, let’s now review the 5 best IPS gaming monitors available today.
